A Hospital Waste Management is defined as any clinic, laboratory, dispensary, pharmacy, nursing home, health unit, maternity centre, blood bank, autopsy centre, mortuary, research institute, or veterinary institution, as well as any other facility involved in healthcare and biomedical activities. Hospital waste includes both risk waste and non-risk waste. Following types of waste are produced by hospitals in different quantities:
- Non-hazardous waste includes paper and cardboard, packaging, food waste, aerosols, and similar items.
- Infectious waste, pathological waste, sharps, pharmaceutical waste, genotoxic waste, chemical waste, and radioactive waste are all examples of risk waste.
- Infectious waste is defined as waste that has been contaminated by pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, parasites, or fungi, and includes cultures from laboratory work, waste from surgeries and autopsies, waste from infected patients, discarded or disposable materials and equipment that have come into contact with such patients, and infected animals from laboratories.
- Tissues, organs, body parts, unborn children, blood, and bodily fluids are all examples of pathological waste.
- Expired or unused pharmaceutical products, spilled contaminated pharmaceutical products, surplus drugs, vaccines, and discarded items used in the handling of pharmaceutical equipment, such as bottles, boxes, gloves, masks, tubes, vials are examples of pharmaceutical waste.
- Liquid, solid, and gaseous waste contaminated with radionuclides generated from in-vitro analysis of body tissue and fluid, in-vivo body organ imaging and tumour localization, and investigation and therapeutic procedures are all examples of radioactive waste.
- Needles, syringes, scalpels, infusion sets, saws and knives, blades, broken glass, and any other item that could cut or puncture are all examples of sharps.
